What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a unique, non-invasive therapy, offering a path to better health
and well being. It can create a place of peace, calm and quiet. Shiatsu
is very relaxing – yet can also be refreshing and energizing; its
effect is determined by the receivers current state of mind and by their
needs in the moment, both physical and mental.
Literally translated the Japanese word shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’.
Shiatsu is a touch therapy. The body reacts to touch in a deep way, which
can help to release emotional blockages. Shiatsu offers an opportunity
to share primarily through the language of the body not the mind, and
enable a journey of increasing self-awareness.
History
Shiatsu has evolved out of 3,500 years of oriental medical wisdom. It
is founded upon the same principles as acupuncture, although no needles
are used. The traditional theory of acupuncture proposes that energy,
known as ‘Chi’ (or ‘Ki’) moves through the body
along well defined passageways called meridians. Balance of these energy
flows is considered to be essential for health and well-being and a Shiatsu
treatment is typically designed with the balancing of these energy flows
in mind. In keeping with the fact that Shiatsu is still a living and evolving
therapy it also incorporates the modern Western sciences of anatomy, physiology
and pathology.
Treatment
A Shiatsu treatment involves applying pressure with fingers, palms, elbows
and feet on energy channels (meridians) and acupressure points, held stretches,
rocking and holding in order to stimulate the body’s innate ability
to heal itself. The bodywork will take place on a Japanese mat (futon)
on the floor (although it is possible to give Shiatsu in a chair if necessary).
There is no need to remove any clothing so please wear comfortable, loose-fitting
clothes. Woman should wear trousers.
After the treatment, most people experience relief from their discomforts,
relief from pain, increased flexibility, calmer mood, and clearer mind.
